Folio (440x290 mm). Engraved portait of the author, engraved title by Triere after Moreau le Jeune (monogram stamp NG, some folds). 69 engraved maps and plates in strong impressions, partly folding (complete, about 4 plates with minor spotting, 3 maps with minor holes, a few plates in the beginning with tear to upper margins, margins partly soiled, some folds, some plates closely shaved near text).
Contemporary half calf with marbled blue paper on boards, richly gilt spine in compartments and title labels, partly worn and rubbed, damage to lower edge, marbled edges. Bookplate of Christian Hammer and Nils Ljungzell.

Atlas to the First French edition which contains important maps to the Americas and Australasia together with fine views, botanical, zoological and other plates. Without the four text volumes.
A smaller English Atlas was published in 1799.
From La Perouse's important scientific expedition to the Pacific 1785-88 which was meant to continue the discoveries of Captain Cook. There are amongst others maps and plans of San Francisco, San Diego, Monterey, South-Chinese sea, and views of Manila, Easter Island.
