FREITAS, SERAPHIM DE. De iusto imperio Lusitanorum Asiatico... Ad Philippum IIII. potentissimum Hispaniarum, & Indiarum monarcham. Vallisoleti (Valladolid, ex officina Hieronymi Morillo) 1625.
8:o. (8), 1-190, (28) ll. Title printed in red and black with woodcut arms of Spain.
Later (20th century) brown calf, somewhat worn, gilt spine in five compartments with red labels. Some minor marginal dampstaining, some foxing, about 20 leaves quite heavily browned.
Rare first edition of the principal printed justification of Portugal´s imperial claims in the East Indies in the face of the attack of Grotius´s Mare liberum. Freitas´s treatise is a powerful refutation of Grotius Mare liberum, and claims that the sovereign has the right to refuse admission of foreigners to his territory or commerce and forbid his subjects trade and intercourse with them.
From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
