(8), (5), 6-432, (5), 438-752, 35, (9) pp. Engraved extra title, printed title with large engraved vignette, lacking all 12 portraits, 88 partly double-page or folding engraved maps (not complete, lacking 2 plates and the large funeral plate consisting of 12 separate leaves, 1 loose, some slight spotting, some creased), several engraved vignettes.
Contemporary full calf bindings, worn and rubbed, richly gilt spines in seven compartments and 6 raised bands, with title labels, partly split joints, marbled inner doblures, damages to head and foot, red edges. Some notes to first free endpaper. Text partly some dampstaining in lower margin, a few repaired tears to margin, some paper losses to margin, some foxing. 2 volumes.
French edition of this richly illustrated work on the Swedish king Charles X and his wars in Poland, Germany etc.
The first edition was published in latin 1696, and a second latin edition in 1729.
The writing of this official history of the Swedish wars with Poland and Denmark from 1655 to 1660 was entrusted by king Charles XI to Samuel Pufendorf, a German historian and expert on international law, who held the first chair of history at the new university of Lund (1668-1676) and was the official Historiographer of the Realm from 1676 until 1689.
