SPANISH MANUSCRIPT DATED 1622. Carta Executoria issued by King Philip IV of Spain, for Luis de Paz y Figueroa. Spain, dated 1622.
Single column, in two sizes of fine ornamental Spanish script (larger with 13 lines per page), capitals in gold, coloured panels decorating some important lines of text, large initials mostly in gold on burgundy heightened with white scrollwork, set within blue frames, others in sprays of blue and pink acanthus wrapped around gold bars on purple grounds (one with a human face set on the side of the initial), initial full-page of silver script in fine cadels on burgundy grounds within a border of dull-gold enclosing foliage and realistic birds as well as a cartouche with the date, full-page genealogical tree diagram, but with initial portrait which once followed this now cut away (thus text begins midway through royal title), acquired from C. E. Rappaport of Rome (their label inside front board), nineteenth- or early twentieth-century blue-edged paper collection label with "263" on outside cover, some water stains to extremities of a few leaves, pastedowns and endleaves much affected by wormholes.
Nineteenth-century tooled morocco in medieval style incorporating panels of early (and probably original) red velvet binding. Dimensions of leaves: 304x215 mm.
We would like to thank Dr. Timothy Bolton for his cataloguing of the present lot.
