8:o (172x100 mm). 10 partly folding plates (all, 1 plate repaired, some foxing, 1 lack of corner), 1 mounted coloured (later) engraved vignette.
Later blue cloth bindings, partly worn and rubbed, partly loose in binding.
Lacking half title to vol. I, title to part 1 with a few letters damaged by colour, some letters to titles and decorations have been later coloured, some offsetting to text, spotting and staining, a few minor tears to margin. 4 volumes.

Pritzel 9259. First edition of this important scientific voyage and a detailed account of Japan. Thunberg (1743-1828) travelled to Japan, Ceylon and South Africa and was called the "Japanese Linnaeus" as well as "The father of Cape Botany". The work was also published in German, English and French.
