ATLAS WITH 88 ENGRAVED MAPS AND INTERESTING MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL. Compiled atlas with 88 mostly double-page engraved maps, plans, and views, as well as 2 plans in manuscript. Collection of maps by Homann, Seutter and other cartographers that is of special cartographic and military relevance and of particular interest for the history of the city of Hamburg. Mostly published in Nürnberg and Augsburg c. 1720-1805.
Increased by a vast collection of interesting military manuscript material regarding battles, march routes, information on the French and English maritime forces etc. written partly on verso of the maps.
Large folio (about 540x330 mm.). For the maps and the other material, see below.
Brown full calf binding, restored, rebound in the 19th century, somewhat stained (sometimes stronger), nearly all margins with small restored tears or remargined corners, 2 maps detached (1 fragmentary map and 3 small 19th century town plans not included in collation). Binding renewed using the old material.
The map part (of which 58 maps by Homann or Homann heirs, and 8 by M. Seutter), including 2 world maps with 2 hemispheres (Homann, Geogr. Insitut Weimar), maps of the continents Europa, Africa, Asia, North- and South-America (also by Homann), as well as many maps of Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Austria, Poland, Portugal and Spain, Great Britain, the Alpine countries, Egypt etc.
The manuscript part. On more than 30 maps you can find on the verso side extensive tables and descriptions of battles, troup movements, military strength, payments to soldiers, lists of casualties, lists of prisoners, sieges, march routes, informations on the French and English maritime forces, informations on the Prussian Royal family, and more, the years 1715 to 1805.
Also 2 manuscript plans with fortifications and battle orders, there is also a 19- leaf manuscript "Anhang".
Loosely inserted is a manuscript on 18 leaves "Register über die in diesem Atlas enthaltenen Landkarten, Pläne, Notizen und historischen Angaben 1838" by J. N. Dühn (former officer from Hamburg, and a participant in the battle of Navarino). This manuscript decribes the provenance history of the atlas and the origin of the manuscript part: for a long time the Atlas was in the hands of a captain von Bemand (his are the military data), and later a "teacher" , who has provided the information on the countries.
The "Anhang" written by Dühn is of special interest for the history of Hamburg, on the fortification history, copies of military minutes on the strategies of 1738 (by major general Loose), a report on the defence preparations for the city and fortification of Hamburg in 1794 (by lieutenant general von Quemheim), a report on the demolition and closing of the fortifications in 1804 (by captain of the engineers A. H. Richard).
