ROYAL AUTOGRAPH. HENRY IV (HENRI, 1553-1610), French King, also known as "Good King Henry", king of Navarre (as Henry III) from 1572-1610 and king of France from 1589-1610. He was the first French monarch of the House of Bourbon.
Document on vellum, 14 lines, signed Henry (king of France, Henry IV), with red wax seal on cord aside (DS). Octroy letter (authorization) to Jean Loys Aymon of the office of secretary and civil clerk in the courtyard of the parliament of Dauphiné. Done at Traversy. 24th of April 1596. Folio (about 230x470 mm). Document slightly worn and creased, with folds, partly darkend.
The Parliament of Dauphiné was created in 1453 and located in Grenoble. In 1558 the parliament discussed many civil and criminal cases (galley, hangings, etc, and precise knowledge of punishment for those who broke the laws of the kingdom).
Henry IV was born December 13, 1553, in Pau, France. Raised a Protestant, he became heir to the French throne through his marriage to Margaret of Valois, but was challenged during a time of religious strife. Despite converting to Catholicism after becoming king of France in 1589, Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes in1598 to foster religious tolerance. It guaranteed religious liberties to protestants and ended the wars of religion. He was killed by the catholic fanatic Ravaillac on May 14, 1610, in Paris.
Henry IV is famous for his sentence "Paris is well worth a mass".
