Folio (about 312x210 mm.). (12), I-CCCX ll. Title printed in red and black with large woodcut illustration (mended tear in lower part), 1 fullpage woodcut, 236 halfpage woodcuts.
Modern limp vellum. Large copy, with edges only trimmed. It has been washed with light traces of the stains remaining (about 50 leaves harder). Tears on title, ll. 9, 44 and 371 mended, a small hole in ll. 92 repaired with loss of a few letters. Some other minor marginal repairs. Some foxing and spotting. Some traces of red colour on illustrations ll. 31, 193, and 213. With the signature of Victor v. Stedingk in pencil on first endpaper, also his bookplate on inside of upper cover.
VD 16, L 2104. 3rd edition of the first German Livius translation, started by Schöfferlin and finished by Wittig. The full-page woodcut shows Schöfferlin presenting the translated book to the emperor Maximilian I.
In the preface (on verso of title) an important reference to the invention of printing by Gutenberg in 1450, and the improvement of the craft by Fust und Schoeffer.
