(14), 1-264, 331-417, (1 blank), (4), 1-154, (12) pp. Engraved fromtispiece portrait, engraved extra title, printed title with engraved vignette, 3 engraved text vignettes, 1 folding engraved map, 16 engraved plates, of which 11 folding (all, 5 with tears, 1 with damages in lower margin).
Contemporary brown panelled calf, worn, boards almost detached, gilt spine in six compartments, damages at head and foot. Minor foxing. Bookplate of Gösta Nobel.
English translation from the same year as the French original. All published of Chardin´s projected 4-volume work.
Nice plates with views of the cities of Tefflis (Tbilisi), Erivan (Jerevan), Tauris, Sultanie, Kom, Cashan and others.
Provenance: Gustaf Oscar Ludvig (Gösta) Nobel (1886-1955), youngest son of Ludvig and Edla Nobel, was in Baku between 1914-17 and later took over as Managing Director over Branobel or "The Nobel Brothers Company". The oil company was founded in Baku by his father and the two brothers Alfred and Robert. He and his family had to flee Russia 1918 during the Russian revolution.
