TWO RARE MAPS OF THE CITY OF KARLSCRONA. FLEURIEU, C. P. C., DE. Two maps from the atlas: Neptune du Cattegatt et de la Mer Baltique.... Paris 1809.
Maps titled: Plan de la Rade, des ports, des bassins et de la ville Carlscrona, à la côte de Suède, province de Blekinge. Gravé en 1788.

Imperial folio (c. 700x545 mm for the volume). 2 double-page engraved maps with text cartouches, uncompleted as some of the cartouches are without printed text, both uncut, c. 600x900 mm (some offsetting, folds, 1 with small repair to left and lower margin, one with some slight strokes of red).
Bound in 20th century dark red half calf, boards with marbled paper and title label with gilt text, slightly worn and rubbed (bound by Hedberg).
Bookplate of Alarik Wachtmeister, and his notes on inside of upper cover where he refers to an article in a Swedish nautical magazine (see below).

Compare Wachtmeister's article in the magazine, Tidskrift för Sjöväsendet, 1912, number 1, page 59- 60, where he mentions these maps which a relative bought at an antiquarian bookshop in Paris in the summer of 1911. Only 30 copies of the atlas was printed, as Fleurieu died in 1810. The maps of Karlskrona seems to be based on maps by Erik af Klint (made in 1771, but no copies are left).

Charles Pierre Claret de Fleurieu (1738-1810). His atlas Neptune du Cattegatt et de la Mer Baltique. contained 65 maps. Bibliotheque National in Paris owns a complete copy where most maps are uncompleted in the same way as these two.
