Fragment of a miniature Book of Hours, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum [Low Countries, first half of fifteenth century]

32 original leaves (plus 2 modern vellum endleaves at front, and 2 at back), eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century ink foliation visible in places and indicating loss of 20 foliated leaves from beginning, and a number of gatherings from end also wanting, but section here continous with Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, and opening of Compline (all from the Hours of the Virgin), collation: i-iv8, single column, 16 lines in a spiky gothic bookhand, red rubrics, capitals touched in red, one-line initials in alternate blue or liquid gold with penwork in red or purple, 2-line initials in liquid gold on blue and pink grounds heightened with white penwork (16 of these with decorated borders of coloured bars with white penwork, and sprouting angular gold or yellow-brown leaves in margins), six large initials in same but with larger swirls of foliage within their bodies (each opening a canonical hour), and with similar borders, first leaf with a coat-of-arms and clumsy foliage in margins (these perhaps added later), a seventeenth- or eighteenth-century miniature of the Passion of St. Stephen partly pasted to an endleaf at front, a clipping from a German sale catalogue of the late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century (showing the binding of this volume) once pasted inside front board and now loose within book, one original repair to a section of text, some thumbing to borders and spots and stains throughout, overall fair and presentable condition, in an eighteenth-century metalwork binding of tooled brass panels showing Christ's Entry into Jerusalem and a lion within ornamental architectural frames and pillars, spine with undulating foliage, boards lined with red velvet.
