Samuel Dyer (1804-1843), a missionary of the London Missionary Society, reached Penang in 1827, where he devoted a good deal of his time to the cutting and perfecting of Chinese metal types. In 1835 he relocated to Malacca (Melaka) and later to Singapore, devoting himself to the printing office and to type-founding.
