Treason in England carried the ultimate penalty of being hanged, drawn and quartered (as well as having one´s lands and goods confiscated). Perhaps because of the seriousness of the penalty, various rules and procedures were observed at Treason trials (detailed in this work) that were not observed on other charges. These mainly benefited the accused.
