RARE WORK ON CHINA. (BOUVET, JOACHIM). L´estat present de la Chine, en figures. Paris (chez Pierre Giffart, graveur du Roy) 1697.

Folio (about 373x240 mm.). (4, title and dedication to le duc de Bourgogne), (1)-4 (Avertissement and Idée du gouvernement de la Chine) pp. 43 engraved plates by P. Giffart (all, minor foxing). Fourteen engraved extra plates bound in at end of the volume (se below).
Contemporary brown calf, slightly worn, somewhat faded richly gilt spine in seven compartments, redspeckled edges. Title laid down and with repaired tear. Dedication mended in inner margin with loss of some letters. First leaf of Avertissement mended in outer margin with loss of some letters. Old annotation on first endpaper.

Joachim Bouvet (1656-1730), French Jesuit and missionary, who worked in China for the emperor Kangxi.
The plates are based on the paintings, which Bouvet carried as gifts for the French king from the emperor Kangxi. They show Chinese princes, princesses, ministers, officers, mandarin, dukes and others.

The fourteen extra engraved plates, see China illustrata nova. Supplement, entries E2-E12 and E14-E16. They are portraits of distinguished chinese and other persons, as Confucius, Cam-Hi, empereur, Mathieu Ricci, published in Paris by Nolin, Langlois, Mariette, and Bonnart about 1690, engraved by Philippe Couplet and others. Engraved surface about 343/275x228/192.
