William Lockhart (1811-1895) was the second medical missionary to China, sent by the London Missionary Society. In 1844, he opened a Chinese hospital in Shanghai, which he managed till 1857. The present book is a narrative of his experiences there, with information about many aspects of Chinese society, Chinese medicine, craft and manufacturing techniques, and historical events.
