Large 4to (c. 270x205 mm.). 232 pp. 16 plates of which 1 is in colour, and 3 maps, of which two in colour. Richly illustrated with 59 photographic illustrations. Original printed wrapper bound in. Dedication in Swedish from the author on upper wrapper (Professor J. E. Rosberg hjärtlig hälsning vännen O. Nordenskjöld = with kind regards from your friend Otto Nordenskjöld). Wrapper soiled and with loss of part of lower margin, repairs, small tear to upper margin on lower and upper wrapper, some folds.
Bound in a modern paper binding with black marbled covers and with spine of red imitated leather. Some folds to text and plates in the beginning. Untrimmed and partly unopend.

Nils Otto Nordenskjöld (1869-1928), Swedish geographer and polar explorer and nephew of Adolf Fredrik Nordenskiöld, founder of the Northeast Passage. On October 16, 1901, he sailed aboard the  Antarctic  from Gothenburg and the following February established an Antarctic station on Snow Hill  Island  off Graham Coast, where he wintered with five companions. Their ship, which had wintered at the island of South Georgia, 54° S and due east of Tierra del Fuego, was crushed in the  pack ice  when it returned to relieve them in February 1903. Nordenskjöld´s party was again forced to winter in the Antarctic until rescued by the Argentine vessel  Uruguay  in November 1903.
Nordenskjöld published his extensive findings in  Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der schwedischen Südpolar-expedition 1901-1903  (1905-20, "Scientific Results of the Swedish South Polar Expedition 1901-1903"). He subsequently became professor of geography (1905) and first rector of advanced commercial studies (1923) at the University of Gothenburg. (Encyclopaedia Britannica).
