OBRADOVIC, DOSITEJ. Two works written or translated by Obradovic, in Serbian (Cyrillic letters), comprising:
AESOP. Ezopove i prochikh raznikh basnotvorcev... [translation: To Aesop and other different fabulists. From different languages translated to Slavonic-Serbian]. Leipzig (Johann Gottlieb Emmanuel Breitkopf) 1788.
8:o (c. 170x110 mm.). (9), 10-450 (lacking last and leaf pp. 451-452, signed Ff2, and pp. 163-174, signed L2-7.), (16, blank,- with old annotations or scribbling) pp. Woodcut headpieces. Title with old annotations and worn in inner margin, small hole, partly some dampstaining and soiling. Last leaf spotted and soiled. BOUND WITH:
Bukvice na sokhraneniyu bivshe do danas. Vienna (Mekhitarists, printed at the expense of Konstantin Kaulitsie) 1830.
(3), 4-79 pp. Title with large repair to upper margin, some spotting.
Contemporary brown half calf, worn, cracks in inner hinges, faded spine titled in gilt, redspeckled edges. Old signatures on first endpaper.
Dositej Obradovic (1739-1811), considered to be the father of Serbian litterature. The second part of his edition of Aesop contains letters written from his travels across Europe, including Russia, and Leipzig in 1788, when the book was published.
The Armenian Mekitarist monastery in Vienna, who published the second work, was founded in 1810 as Venice, the home of the mother house, came under Austrian rule.
