(HOLINSHED, RAPHAEL). The historie of Scotlande, conteyning the beginning, increase, proceedings, continuance, Actes and Gouernemente of the Scottish nation, from the originall thereof unto the yeare 1571. Gathered and written in the English tongue by R. H. London (Lucas Harrison) 1577.
Folio (285x192 mm). (5, 1 blank, 1, 1 blank), 22, (2 blanks), 518, (26) pp. Lacking errata leaf. Title with in richly ornamented woodcut border, with arms of Holinshed on verso. Printed in double column, richly illustrated throughout with woodcut illustrations in the text.
Near contemporary blindstamped calf binding on wooden boards, with metal fittings, lacking clasps, restored and rebacked with new title label, new endpapers, binding partly rubbed and worn with split joints. Title leaf with some worming and soiling to lower corner. Last leaf repaired, last 6 leaves cut shorter to upper margin, a few losses of letters, hole with small loss of woodcut image on page 41-42 and small tear, small hole with textloss on page 67. Partly with some faint dampstaining, some spotting and inkstains. With Sebastian Münster´s woodcut map of Edinburgh "Beschreibung der königlichen Statt Edinburg..." (1574 or later) tipped in on first endpaper.

First edition of the Scottish part only of Holinshed´s chronicles. A second edition was published in 1587, but without illustrations.
This great historical work on British history was published in two volumes with three separate titles for England, Scotland and Ireland (The Firste [Laste] Volume of the Chronicles of England, Scotlande, and Irelande). Here is only the Scottish part.
Provenance: Sten Ringselle (1949-2017), Swedish antiquarian bookdealer who in 1992 opened his shop Antiquaria in Gothenburg.
