4to (275x227 mm). (30), 160, (84) pp. Engraved title, title page with engraved vignette. 1 folding engraved portrait of Joannes Gulielmus. With 18 fullpage and 38 in-text engravings by Jan van Vianen, illustrated decorative initials, as well as many head- and tailpieces (portrait with small repaired tear, some foxing and spotting to plates, mostly to margins).
Original vellum, worn, lower cover stained, speckled edges. Text with some spotting and foxing, a few leaves in the middle with stain to upper margin, a few marginal notes. With signaure of Carl Aurivillius, dated Uppsala 1765, on inside of cover, signature of A. Norrelius in the margin of the engraved title. Bound in at the beginning: Schyllberg - Kellander, Poeseos in academia Upsalensi...1718 (title, 3 pp).
Rare edition of various fables by Phaedrus (15 BC - 50 AD), a Roman fabulist who is recognized as the first writer to Latinize entire books of fables, using the iambic metre Greek prose of the Aesop tales.
