Contemporary brown half calf, worn, cracks in the joints, gilt spine in six compartments, some damage at head, red edges. Title dampstained, marginal annotations and underlinings in pencil. Signature of John Locke on inside of upper cover.

Originally published in Dutch in 1668, this first French edition (issued by two different publisher´s: Louys Billaine and Thomas Jolly) was translated by Vincent Minutoli from the Dutch version published by Saagna at Amsterdam.
Provenance: John Locke (1632-1704), with his signature and ms. library markings on front paste-down (see John Harrison & Peter Laslett: The library of John Locke, Oxford 1965, p. 116, entry 848).
Locke was an English philosopher and physician, widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism".
