Folio (about 390x240 mm.). (12), 1-1359, (1 blank), (4), 1-1263, (1 blank), (8), 1-552 pp., column 553-592, pp. 593-1238. 1 engraved frontispiece (in vol. I), 1 engraved portrait of Louis Moréri (in vol. I), 3 titles printed in red and black, some engraved headpieces and initials.
Contemporary brown full calf, slightly worn, gilt edges of covers, richly gilt spines in seven compartments, one vol. with small damage at head, redspeckled edges. Minor foxing. Bookplates of von Düben. 3 volumes.

Leaf V2 (pp 155/156) in vol. I with text dealing with Henri IV (1553-1610), cancelled.
The first edition was published in 1674, and can be called the first modern European encyclopaedia. The present work is the second edition, edited by G. Parayre. The third volume or supplement was edited by abbé de Saint-Ussan and others in 1689.
China is described on pp. 880-882 in vol. I and "Tartarie" on pp. 1171-1172 in vol. II. The supplement (vol. III) has an article on China on pp. 324-336, much enlarged compared to that of 1681, and there is also an article about Confucius (Kongzi) on pp. 381-382. There is also an article on "Tartares de Kin" on pp. 1143-1144.
