Contemporary brown half leather, worn, marbled boards, cracked joints, spine in six compartments, rubbed and chipped at head and foot. Red edges.

Gobelentz´s working copy, extensively annotated: Interleaved, 250 leaves, white and blue paper, all but 59 annotated in blue, red, and brown in manuscript (many on both sides) in German, French, English, and Chinese. Also extensive manuscript notes, comments, and corrections to the text in the wide margins of the printed pages.
Inscription by Gabelentz dated 1868 on first endpaper, his bookplate on rear paste-down. A studio photographic portrait of him has been mounted on the front paste-down.
A three-page autograph letter in 8:o signed by James Legge, dated Oxford June 19, 1879, is tipped in between
pp. 80-81.
