This catechism in Siraya, an extinct West Formosan language, was drafted by Simon van Breen and Johannes Happart and revised by Daniel Gravius, a missionary of the Dutch Reformed Church who laboured at first in Batavia and afterwards for four years in Formosa (1647-51), where the Dutch East India Company held colonial possessions between 1624 and 1661.
Together with Favorlang, another extinct Formosan language, Siraya was used for missionary purposes in West Formosa on Tayouan.
Provenance: From the library of the Earls of Macclesfield, with engraved bookplate and small blind-stamp on title-leaf.
From the library of Swedish antiquarian bookdealer Björn Löwendahl (1941-2013).
