CANTON. "Vue d´optique d´un arc de triomphe tres élevé, en la ville de Canton en la Chine". Paris, chez Jacques Chereau, no date (about 1750-60).
Engraved handcoloured "vue d´optique" (plate size c. 300x420 mm.). In passepartout. Some light dampstaining in left outer margin.

Vues d´optique were engravings to be viewed through a convex lens, such that the viewer saw a reversed and seemingly three-dimensional scene.
Jacques Chéreau (1688-1776) was a printmaker and publisher of optical prints at the rue St. Jacques in paris. After his death the business was continued by his grandson, Jacques-François Chéreau (1742-1794).
