Beskrivning

WEIS, JEAN MARTIN (1711-1751). Représentation des fêtes données par la ville de Strasbourg pour la convalescence du Roi, à l´arrivée et pendant la séjour de Sa Majesté en cette ville, inventé, dessiné et dirigé par J. M. Weis, graveur de la ville de Strasbourg. Paris (imprimé par Laurent Aubert) no date (1745).

Large folio (625x450 mm.). Engraved title with figurative border, engraved portrait of the king, 11 engraved double-page plates (complete, title with some soiling to margins, portrait with dampstain affecting lower part of plate and margin, minor spot, plates with slight spotting or foxing to margins, faint dampstain to lower margin to 1 plate), 20 engraved text pages with floral and figurative borders, 2 large vignettes (10 of the last text pages with dampstain to margins and lower parts of the engravings).

19th century half calf with blue covers, title in gilt on upper cover, partly worn and with rubbed corners, faded gilt spine.

Title engraved by Marvye, the plates engraved by Le Bas (1 by Weis) after Weis. Antoine Michel Padeloup (called Padeloup le Jeune (1685-1758), binder to the King in 1733, one of the most famous French binders of the time.

A magnifique representaion of the festivities held for Louis XV 1744, to celebrate that he was recovering from a grave illness he had received in Metz.
