Pp. 31 ff. contain an extract from Jean-Pierre Guillaume Pauthiere: "Histoire des relations politiques de la Chine", Paris 1859, pp. 209-234, dealing with the kotow (kotow - a former Chinese custom of touching the ground with the forehead as a sign of respect or submission).
