ELEVEN LEAVES FROM DEVOTIONAL BOOKS. 11 leaves from devotional codices (including 2 from early printed books), 15th and 16th century. Manuscripts on vellum, all in Latin.
Including individual leaves from (i) from an Italian 15th century Psalter in semi-humanist script with gold and blue small initials and a white-vine initial, modern pencil marks "£2 MS 531", 171x125 mm., (ii) an early 15th century French Book of Hours with gold initials on pink and blue grounds, one larger initial in blue on gold grounds enclosing foliage and with floral sprays in margin, 120x72 mm., (iii) a brightly illuminated 16th century French Book of Hours with coloured initials on gold grounds, and text within gold borders, as well as two leaves from a large 15th century Italian Lectionary, with coloured initials encased within penwork in contrasting colour, each leaf 317x218 mm., and leaves from other Books of Hours.
Item (i) here is a newly discovered leaf from a Psalter with Passion Sequences copied by the scribe Pietro Ursuleo of Capua (bishop of Satriano near Naples, d. 1483). It was produced in south-west Italy (perhaps Naples), in the decades after the middle of the 15th century, and the leaf with the scribe´s colophon survives in Canberra, National Library of Australia, 4052/T.107. Other leaves are listed in Medieval & Renaissance Manuscripts in New Zealand Collections, 1989, no. 89. The leaf here contains Ps. 27:9-30 (ending "Super omnes inimicos meos .").
