Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590), Flemish and German painter, engraver, mapmaker and publisher.
Geschichtsblätter was published in a series of historical prints representing contemporary events, including many battles, sieges, executions, assassinations, parades, court scenes, etc. of the Eighty Years War in the Netherlands, but also in France and other parts of Europe. These engravings represent the earliest form of pictorial journalism, the precursor of the illustrated newspaper.
Hogenberg also engraved maps for Ortelius´s "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". In 1568 he was banned from Antwerp and emigrated to Cologne, where he opened a studio. Together with Georg Braun he published the town book "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" in 1572-1618.
Sold as a collection of plates, not subject to return.
