Alexander Mackenzie (1764-1820), born in Scotland, was a fur trader and explorer. Together with his cousin Roderick, he established Fort Chipewyan on the southern shore of Lake Athabasca, whence his first expedition began. Its main purpose was to find and establish a trade route to the Pacific ocean, but this failed although he added a wealth of knowledge about Canadian geography. The second expedition was successful, however, and made Mackenzie the first European to cross North America north of Mexico.
Provenance: Emaunuel Cederström, Krusenberg manor, Sweden.
