Folio (about 351x210 mm.). (24, including engraved title), (2), 3-248, 247-327, (5), (2), 3-39, (1 blank), (2), 3-226, (2) pp. Engraved title, many woodcut illustrations in text.
Contemporary goatskin, worn, oxidated gilt boards, rebacked, spine in seven compartments, redspeckled edges. Partly dampstained in upper margin at end, some other minor marginal dampstaining, some foxing.

This is a revised and much expanded edition of Piso's "Historiae naturalis Brasiliae " (1648), with i.a. Jacob de Bondt's "Historiae naturalis & medicae India Orientalis libri sex" (160 pp.), edited by Willem Piso, added. The first four parts on tropical medicine were originally published in 1642 in 24mo, entitled "De medicina indorum lib. IV". The Piso edition contains two additional parts on Asian fauna and flora, supplied with a large number of woodcuts of animals from the Indian Ocean area. Parts two and six contains decriptions of tea and tea culture. Acupuncture is briefly dealt with in the last chapter of part five.
