A MIRROR OF LIFE AND SCIENCE. RODERICUS ZAMORENSIS. Speculum vitae humanae. Augsburg (Günther Zainer) 1471.

Small folio (about 310x220 mm.) (128) ll. 35 lines, gothic letter, one large initial handpainted in red on first page, many smaller initials handpainted in red. A line of type, omitted by the compositor, has been printed or stamped in by hand at the bottom of 6/8v as usual.
Contemporary blindstamped (late gothic with palmettes, rosettes, "Ave-Maria"-textbands and other stamps on both covers) black calf over wooden boards, woen, some worming, partly renovated, brass fittings (lacks clasps, remnants of newer straps), rebacked spine with blindstamps in four compartments, blank vellum spine label, new inner doublures and endpapers. Some marginal worming. Some staining. Browned waterstaining in upper outer corner and part of upper outer margin, stronger to the end. Some contemporary marginal annotations. Bookplate "Bibliotheque du PlessisVilloutreys".

The Speculum of Roderigo Sanchez de Arévala (1404-1470), bishop of Zamora, provides a strongly autobiographical moral treatise outlining the benefits and obligations of the various secular and religious stations of man. It was first printed at Rome in 1468 by Sweynheym and Pannartz and proved immensely popular, being printed in at least 20 subsequent editions, including translations, in the 15th century. 
The first dated book with a section on medicine. It is an encyclopaedia of human life dealing with the various arts and professions, and includes chapters on mathematics, astronomy, navigation, music, agriculture etc. (Honeyman Coll. 2670, for the first edition).
This book is the first print with the famous 2nd type of the Augsburg printer Günther Zainer, which is his most acclaimed one with great influence on many contemporary incunabula printers.
