L'Illustration horticole was a monthly periodical and is by many considered to be one of the finest botanical periodicals of the second half of the 19th century. It is lavishy illustrated with chromolithograph plates. Jean Jules Linden (1817-98), the editor, was also a orchid grower and collector. A large part of the illustrations were made after drawings by Alphonse Goossens (1866-1944), best known for his work in Cogniaux's Dictionnaire iconographique des orchidees (1896-1907).
