8vo (215x130 mm.). 1571 hand-coloured engraved plates, some folding (occasional foxing throughout, sometimes more, some offsetting, a few original flowers inset, vol. V with some marginal dampstains together with worming to edges, some occasional notes with pencil, text with similar conditions).
Worn and partly damaged contemporary half calf bindings, gilt spines with green labels, a few joints split, vol. V with damaged spine and dampstained covers, endpapers dampstained). Bookplate of A. W. Clifford. Some pencil notes on inside of cover to vol. I. 7 volumes.

Second edition of the so called ´short edition´ (see preface of this edition) of the famous English botanical study with all in the description presented plates. The important and wide ranged botanical study about the plants of England was published over a period of 6 decades and was enriched by descriptions by Sowerby´s colleague Smith.
James Sowerby (1757-1822), English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist.
Provenance: The consigners´ family is related to James Sowerby (1757-1822) through their great grandmother, who was the daughter Charlotte Ann Sowerby (Lottie), later married Bryant. The family´s grandmother later bought this work in London in the 1920´s.
