SOWERBY, JAMES. The British miscellany, or, Coloured figures of new, rare, or little known animal subjects : many not before ascertained to be inhabitants of the British Isles : and chiefly in the possession of the author... Vol. I (all published). London (R. Taylor & Co, sold by the Author a.o.) (1804) - 1806.
8vo (227x135 mm.). (176 pp.). 77 handcoloured engraved plates (complete, 2 folding, the last plate probably belongs to another work, only occasional foxing and some offsetting, text with some foxing, some notes in pencil on the text opposite the plate).
Late 19th century full calf binding with gilt bordure, partly worn, mostly to edges, covers slightly warped, lower cover with partly damaged corner, richly gilt spine with title label, partly faded, speckled edges. Owner's stamp of James Charles Dale on title and his engraved bookplate, note on inside of upper board: "11120 Dale's catalogue" together with his signature in pencil on flyleaf.

First edition originally issued in 12 parts (1804)-1806 (all published). With plates of shells, whales, fish, starfish, ducks, beetles, butterflies, snakes etc. A second edition was published by Bernard Quaritch, London, in 1875.
James Charles Dale (1791 - 1872), English naturalist who devoted almost all of his adult life to entomology.
James Sowerby (1757-1822), English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist.
Provenance: The consigners' family is related to James Sowerby (1757-1822) through their great grandmother, who was the daughter Charlotte Ann Sowerby (Lottie), later married Bryant. The family's grandmother later bought this work in London in the 1920's.
