8vo (210x125 mm.). 265 hand-coloured engraved plates (lacking 2 according to Nissen, some minor off-setting, occasional underlinings, a few notes in colour in the index). With preserved errata-slips.
Later half calfs, rubbed and worn, gilt spines in compartments, gilt titles, inner hinges partly split, marbled edges (bound by Herbert Jones, Swansea). 2 volumes.

James Sowerby (1757-1822), English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist.

Provenance: The consigners´ family is related to James Sowerby (1757-1822) through their great grandmother, who was the daughter Charlotte Ann Sowerby (Lottie), later married Bryant. The family´s grandmother later bought this work in London in the 1920´s.
