WORLD MAP. PTOLEMAEUS - MERCATOR, GERHARD. Universalis tabula iuxta Ptolemaeum. Amsterdam 1695.
Handcoloured (later colour) engraved map of the world surrounded by four allegorical figures in the corners. About 350 x 480 mm. Blank verso. Partly with some creases and folds, minor tears in lower margins.
Shirley 139. The revised second state with the borders re-engraved with the four figures representing the four elements (Zeus - Fire, Hera - Air, Neptune - Water and Gaia - Earth). First edition in 1578 was surrounded by 12 windheads.
There is a very large Taprobana (modern day Sri Lanka) in the Indian Ocean and the Indian subcontinent is severely truncated, though the Ganges is noted. Only the northern part of Africa is shown with the Nile originating in the twin lakes south of the Equator in the Lunae montes (Mountains of the Moon).
