JOURNEY TO SOUTH AMERICA 1937. Private photograph album of a journey to South America 1937 with 279 black and white prints with pasted printed captions in margin. Hand painted dedication page signed J. P. Åhlén, 41 card board leaves with 279 photographs, 20, (1) pages of printed text, (3) pages with related newspaper clippings from Swedish and South American newspapers.

Oblong folio (290x380 mm.). Fine leather album with tooled and hand painted front cover depicting a map of the journey and 2 views. Front cover title "Minnesbilder från resan till Syd-Amerika 11 febr. - 6 april 1937. Charles Löfgren" (translation: Souvenir of the voyage to South America). Minimal spots and rubbings to album cover and some offsetting from the newspaper articles to blank pages. In a cloth box with small stains and rubbings.

The banker Charles Löfgren (1874-1960) memories from his trip to South America was published in 1937 by "Åhlén och Holm" under the title "Dagboksanteckningar från resan till Sydamerika 11 februari - 6-april" in 8vo, the same printed text is present at the end of this album but set in 2 columns in oblong folio, it is clear that the printed text bound within this album predates the octavo-edition in that one printing error has been corrected in pencil. This album was made for Charles Löfgren on commission by the publisher J. P. Åhlén, who also attended the voyage. The dedication page reads: "Med hjärtligt tack för gott kamratskap under vår gemensamma angenäma resa till Syd-Amerika våren 1937 ber jag få överlämna detta minnesalbum, samtidigt som jag även frambär min stora tacksamhet för ditt goda arbete och stora hjälp vid utarbetandet av detsamma" (translation: With cordial greetings for good camaraderie during our joint travel to South America in the spring of 1937 i hereby submit this album, with my gratitude for your excellent work").

The album begins with 26 prints from the voyage over the atlantic from Gothenburg and continues with 20 prints from Rio de Janeiro, 18 prints from Petrópolis, 21 prints from Santos, 25 prints from São Paulo, 9 from Campinas, 28 prints from Montevideo, 4 prints from "the seaside resort", 4 prints from Atlántida, 42 prints from Buenos Aires, 3 prints Tigre, 1 print from a dinner party in Buenos Aires, 23 prints from Angra dos Reis and 55 prints from the voyage over the Atlantic on the way back to Sweden. A wide variety of motives from street scenes, coffee plantation, snake farm, rural scenes, banana shipping and portraits with captions such as "A black Adonis" and "A happy street vendor". 2 of the newspaper clippings consist of articles written by Åhlén regarding the trip.
