Publisher´s yellow blind-decorated cloth, dustsoiled, title in gilt on upper cover, blank spine, damaged at head. Title and first endpaper loose.

From the foreword: "This Collection of Phrases is believed to be a fragment of a very extensive work by some one of the French Jesuit Missionaries in China (Lionne was not a Jesuit but a member of the "Missions étrangeres de Paris"). The pronunciation of the Chinese characters is that of Peking... The Ortography of the pronunciation is French..."
Pages 1-75 were manifolded by means of anastatic printing, by which those pages were taken from the ms. writing of Mr. Hornblow, transcriber at the British Museum.
