MARIA FEODOROVNA, Empress Consort of Russia (1847-1928). Portrait photograph signed with whole name, dated 1910, shown standing half length by a chair, by W. & D. Downey, London. 135 x 103mm mounted on green card 245 x 140 mm., in wooden frame, the upper border with the Imperial crown (very faded, a few spots, the frame with some wear, lacking the glass).
Born Princess Dagmar of Denmark, the daughter of Christian IX, had been betrothed in 1864 to the Tsarevich Nicholas, eldest son of Alexander II, who died before their marriage. At his request his younger brother Alexander proposed and was accepted. Upon her conversion to the Orthodox faith she took the name of Maria Feodorovna, and was married on 28 October/9 November 1866. Following her husband´s early death in 1894, she lived in Russia until the revolution, when she went into exile, first in England, then settling in her native Denmark where she died, ten years after the murder of her son Nicholas II and his family.
William and Daniel Downey were Victorian studio photographers operating in Newcastle and London from the 1860s to the 1910s. Among Queen Victoria´s favourite photographers, they became known for their photography of members of the Royal Family and other society figures. The firm continued to operate after the death of its founder, Daniel Downey.
