FIREWORKS AT CELEBRATION IN STOCKHOLM 1669 - ORDER OF THE GARTER. HOLLAR, WENCESLAUS. Rare copper-engraved view depicting the celebration in Stockholm when the Swedish king Karl XI (Charles XI) recieved the Order of the Garter from Charles II of England. Engraved plate with The title and five Latin verses underneath. C. 315x410 mm. In lower left corner Pag. 424. Unsigned. (small repair to upper right corner).
In foreground on water are small boats, with large barge in centre with pavilion amidships. Beyond is fireworks display, with several set pieces including St. George & Dragon. Rockets fired behind and troops in background. Framed.

The Most Noble Order of the Garter was delievered through the Ambassador of England, count of Carlisle.

Wenceslaus Hollar (Prague 1607 - London 1677), one of the most skilled etchers of his time. He studied under Merian in Frankfurt, later he became part of the houshold of the Earl of Arundel and settled in England in 1637. He stayed most of his life in London and during the Great Fire he made many scenes of the city before and after the fire (Views of London). About 3,000 plates are credited to him.
