First edition. Later editions, 1805 and 1813, were edited with additions of notes by Alexander Murray. James Bruce of Kinnaird (1730-1794), Scottish wine-merchant, traveller and author. His book was immediately popular, but contemporary critics were negative, suspecting the author of outright lies. Later critics have recognised his descriptions of people, lands and antural life in Ethiopia as essentially original and correct, though his claim to be the first European to reach the source of the Blue Nile most certainly is not.
