4to (210x150 mm.). Extra engraved title, (60), 486, (1) pp. 20 folding engraved plates (complete, some dampstains in top corner of all plates, some browning). Woodcut ornament on title.
Contemporary vellum, partly worn and lower cover with stains and scribble, covers partly askew, split inner joints, manuscript title on spine. Owner's notes and signature on both titles, one dated 1667, the other 1779. Occasional minor foxing and browning, owner's signature on fly leaf and on both titles.

Second edition (1st Paris 1647) of the French translation of Descartes´ "Principia philosophiae" (1644) by Claude Picot. The "Principles of Philosophy" was the only complete version of Descartes´ natural philosophy published in his lifetime and the 1st published work in which he presents and defends his vortex theory, the core of his heliocentric model of the universe.

The work was bought by Reinhold Holterman in Vienna, Amsterdam or Paris in the 1920-30ies.
