DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU, H. L. Traité des arbres et arbustes qui se cultivent en France en pleine terre. I-II. Paris (Guerin & Delatour) 1755.
Large 4to (260x195 mm). (5), lxij, 368, (4), 387 pp. 250 woodcut plates, 4 folding engraved plates, 1 engraved vignette, 190 text engravings /head-pieces, (complete, 1 plate with small spot [5], some slight spotting mostly to margins, text with minor spotting or faint dampstaining, 1 page with tear and repair to margin, part of corner cut off on page 359 in vol. ).
Contemporary lightbrown full calf, rubbed and very worn, upper boards with gilt exlibris with the letters I C G under a baronial crown, outer joints split, gilt spines in compartments with blue title labels, spines damaged, blue marbled edges, some worming. Signature by the former owner Ivan Klastersky, dated 1934 on the first free endpaper in both volumes. 2 volumes.
Nissen, BBI 547, Pritzel 2469. First edition. The beautiful large woodcuts are partly printed from the cuts of the Mattioli herbal.
Important and influential work on planting, growing and maintaining trees.
Provenance: Dr Ivan Klastersky (1901-1979), botanist and taxonomist in Czechoslovakia. He worked as a researcher in the National Museum in Prague. This work was probably bought by him in the 1930ies.
