Folio (420x300 mm). Photolithographic title in red and black with illustrations, printed title with vignette of a lighthouse, 41 chromolithograph plates (complete, 2 plates [25, 32] with wear to the fish, the latter due to damp, woodcut illustrations, 1 text leaf [to plate 31] with hole due to damp with small textloss, 1 page creased, some foxing to the last pages.
Contemporary brown half leather, gilt title to upper board, partly worn and rubbed, somewhat faded gilt spine.

First edition. *Dal, pp. 281-3 & 312. Nissen ZBI, 3379. Good copy of the finest natural history colour-plate book produced in Finland in the 19th century. Originally issued in twelve parts. Text lacks to plate XIX, otherwise complete.
Swedish and English parallel text by Odo Morannal Reuter [1850-1913] and Aukusti Johana Mela [prior to 1877 August Johan Malmberg].
