IMPRESSIVE BINDING OF NORDBERGS ON CHARLES XII. (NORDBERG, JÖRAN ANDERSSON). Leben Carl des Zwölften Königs in Schweden mit Münzen und Kupfern. I-III. Hamburg (J. G. Trausold) 1745-52.

3 engraved title leaves with vignettes (first one with some dampstains to margin or outer part, some creases), 4 engraved full-page portraits (lacking 1 portrait [Adolf Fredrik?], some faint dampstains to margin, a few spots to margin of Karl XII ), 24 partly folding engraved maps and plates (complete, some dampstains, 1 with small tear to folding, a few minor tears, some creases, 1 small repair), many fine engravings in the text, like 45 initials, 87 engravings, vignettes, and 215 engravings of coins. On verso of title small text with bookbinder information.
Impressive contemporary Sweish full calf binding with richly gilt-decorated boards with different flower decors, border and stars, leather clasps and metal fittings of rotyal crowns, clasps with the metal monogram of Carl XII under a crown, inner gilt dentelles, inner bordures with marbled paper, but partly worn, some rubbing and spotting, hinges split and partly burnt, 1 clasp loose, inner doblures with slight dampstains, richly gilt spine in compartments with gilt titles, fully gilt edges, in lower compartment the gilt letters of Fr. S. probably laer, upper part of spine with damages. Probably bound by Sven Magnusson Brohielm (active in Stockholm 1695-99). Text partly with some staining, dampstaining and / or foxing, one page with small tear to margin. Bookplate of Carl Robert Lamm on inside of upper board.

First German edition, translated by J. H. Heubel. This German translation is much expanded compared to the Swedish original from 1740.
The portraits are engraved by Fritsch and others and depicts amongst others Charles XII, Fredrik, Gustav III and Nordberg the author. One of the engraved vignettes is the oldest known Scandinavian picture of a working printing office.
Plates and maps from Hamburg, Riga, Stralsund, Thorn, Narva, Tönningen, Penemünde, Rügen, Tondern, Traustadt, Pultusk, Clissow, Warschau und Kalisch and also Holstein und Norwegen.
Provenance: The collection of Carl Robert Lamm (1856-1938), Näsby Slott (Stockholm, Sweden). Lamm was a Swedish engineer, innovator, industrialist and large collector of art. His collection was famous for oriental rugs, ceramics, silverware etc., he also had one of the largest collections of Contemporary Swedish art of his time.
In 1923 the sale of "Catalogue of the Lamm collection from Näsby castle (near Stockholm, Sweden)" was held in New York.
