MISSAL, USE OF MONTE CASINO. Missale monasticum usum more & ritu (m) Casinensis congregationis cum multis missis de nono additis. Venice, J. Pentius, for Luc Antonio Giunta, 16. May (16. April), 1507.

Small 8vo (160x115 mm.). (16), 304 pp. Title with large woodcut, text illustrated with 19 full-page woodcuts, many woodcut initials. Printed in red and black, music. Gothic type, text in two columns.
Late 16th-century Italian morocco gilt over wooden boards, boards richly gilt with bordure and decor, somewhat rubbed and worn, some minor worming, repaired at head and foot of spine and corners, lacking clasps and fittings, spine with later label, wrongly dated 1507, gilt and gauffered edges, later slipcase somewhat worn and with some damages. Ink scribbles at foot of title and final leaf deleting a few words, lacking Al, short repair +5, small wormhole final 2 leaves just touching text, somewhat dampstained at beginning and end, some spotting and staining. Signature of Torkel Olsson in pencil on endpaper. Bought at Sotheby´s in May 11, 1990.

Lucantonio Giunta, printer and engraver, originally from Florence, incorporates the Florentine city emblem, The Fleur de Lys, in his printer´s device, which is found on the last page of the Missal.
This Missal was intended for use by the Italian Cassinese Congregation, a part of the Benedictine Order, founded in 1408.
