Thomas Shaw was appointed chaplain to the English factory at Algiers between 1720 and 1734, during which time he travelled widely in North Africa and the Levant, and his Travels were esteemed for the botanical and zoological illustrations and for the descriptions of antiquities. Shaw is well known in the field of botany for his catalogue of the rarer plants which he observed during his travels in Barbary, Egypt, and Arabia, a classification amounting to 632 species and including crude plates, all donated to Oxford University, where he became Regius Professor of Greek in 1741, and preserved under the name of Shawia.
The half-title reads ´Travels, or Geographical, Physical and Miscellaneous Observations &c.´ Also included is ´A Collection Of Such Papers As Serve To Illustrate The Foregoing Observations´, with separate half-title, pagination and register. Four of the head-pieces and one tail-piece are by Hubert Gravelot, and one head-piece is by John Rocque. ESTC t114690. (Sir John Soane´s Museum London).
