Large folio. Title printed in red and black (cut and repaired in margins, dampstain and foxing), with part-titles (title to suppl. V with some worming in lower margin, some foxing, all titles with old monogram signature), 1 engraved portrait, 127 engraved partly double or folding plates (lacking 1 [126], about 10 with tears or repaired tears, 1 partly loose, 1 stained, some spotting and foxing).
Somewhat later (19th century) half calf, crack in inner front joint, partly worn and rubbed, gilt spine with red title label, damaged at top. New endpapers. Partly dampstained, foxed. Bookplate of the Hammer library.
Bernard de Montfaucon (1655-1741), French scholar and Benedictine monk.
This maganificent work reproduces all the ancient monuments and objects significant, at the time, for the study of religion and customs of the ancient. The work was groundbreaking in archaeology, anthropology and art history.
