Original black cloth with the "Liberty Bell" in gold on upper cover, gilt title to spine, all edges gilt. With a dedication to Fredrika Bremer from Maria Weston Chapman on first endpaper.
Maria Weston Chapman (1806-1855), a leading member of the abolitionist movement, also a driving force of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and the American Anti-Slavery Society. Editor of the annual publication "The Liberty Bell" 1839-1846, and sporadically after that (ceased publication in 1858). Also editor to a couple of anti-slavery papers. Fredrika Bremer (1801-1865), Swedish author, a pioneer of the emancipation of women in Sweden.
Provenance: The Royal Academy of Sciences through a donation by Gustaf Retzius in 1919.
Gustaf Retzius (1842-1919), anatomist, ethnologist, and anthroprologist. Member of the Academy 1901-1919. Nominated to the Nobel Prize 23 times.
Married to Anna Retzius-Hierta, daughter of Lars Johan Hierta, founder of the still existing paper Aftonbladet and industrialist.
