DANISH MASTER-BINDING FROM THE WORKSHOP OF NIELS ANTHON.
SLANGE, NIELS - GRAM, HANS. Den stormaegtigste konges Christian den fierdes konge til Damnark og Norge,... historie... Ed. Peter Fogh. Kjøbenhavn (trykt udi Hans Kongl. Majests. privilegerede Bogtrykkerie) 1749.

Folio (402x270 mm.). (4), (3), 4-10, (2), 3-968, 968-1534, (1) pp. 2 engraved portraits (Christian IV and Niels Slange, some foxing).
Fine Danish Master-binding from the late 18th century by an apprentice in the workshop of master binder Niels Anthon (1761-1828), somewhat worn, straight-grained red morocco richly gilt, sides elaborately tooled with interlacing strapwork forming irregular and circular compartments, the spaces filled with floral volutes, leafy stems and flowers rising from vases, stars and other decorative tools, inner dentelles with gilt roll tool, gilt edges of covers, spine gilt in eight compartments with floral and foliate tools, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, flyleaves watermarked J. Honig & Zoonen, occasional slight spotting or browning.

A magnificent example of a Danish binding from the workshop of Niels Anthon of Copenhagen (1761-1828) to a set design. A very similar design is illustrated in Nielsen and Berg´s "Danmarks bogbindere" and at least three other bindings on copies of the same work are known with identical designs and many tools in common. One in the Library of Congress was in the 1957 Baltimore Museum of Art bookbinding exhibition (Miner, no. 448, pl. 88) and was apparently bound in the late 18th century in the shop of Niels Anthon, son of the Master Binder, Peter Anthon. Another example, in the Wormsley Library, was apparently bound c. 1765 in the workshop of the father, Peter Anthon. These bindings were clearly demonstration pieces produced by Anthon´s apprentices to a set design for examination. The appearance of the same tools on all four bindings is evidence of the survival rates of bookbinding tools.
